Prevalence of Rotavirus and Adenovirus in Children with Acute Viral Gastroenteritis in Dakar, Senegal, 2018-2022

Background: Rotavirus infection is the most important cause of infectious, severe and dehydrating diarrhea death in children aged 5 under continues to have a significant impact on child morbidity mortality our countries. The aim this study was retrospectively determine prevalence rotavirus adenovirus patients presenting with gastroenteritis symptoms distribution pathogens according gender, age season.
 Materials Methods: Stool samples received at medical microbiology laboratory between January 2018 December 2022 were evaluated for rotavirus/adenovirus antigen BIOSYNEX Rotavirus/Adenovirus BSS kit (BIOSYNEX, Switzerland).
 Results: detected 36 (6.96%) 517 stool 16 (3.09%) positive adenovirus. Co-infection 10 (1.93%). Prevalence 12.22% (28/229) 4.80% (11/229) respectively 0-12 months. Our results showed difference among three groups (rotavirus, mixed) regard their categories. Regarding monthly distribution, highest detection rate found months September (12.28%) February (14.89%). Adenoviruses continuously over period from June (p<0.05).
 Conclusion: Due high viral diarrhoea region that can be associated it, it laboratories are equipped detect viruses specifically efficient management. All these actions combined vaccination will contribute reduction burden infections health system.
